THAT'S GOOD ... I can be confused with Tiger Woods on the golf course when ... hitting the occasional bad shot and cursing profusely.
The shot I dread most on the golf course is ... the short lob wedge to a tight green over sand.
My strangest moment on the golf course was ... a unspecified "name your game" event in Hawaii that resulted in red faces and some frightened oriental lady golfers. (See Jeffrey Adkins profile for more details).
The strangest thing that has happened to me, or I have seen on a Golfest trip was ... doing an Arizona golf fly-by at Troon with Jim Allen getting two speeding tickets in two minutes. Finishing a close second was when a pelican picked up my ball off the fairway at Pebble Beach, and dropped it 50-yards closer to the hole.
My (best) shining moment on the golf course was when ... …I was playing in a scramble tournament at Chestnut Ridge Golf Course in Blairsville, Pennsylvania (September, 2006.) We were doing well as a group, probably four or five under when we came to a long par-5 on the back nine. I hit driver about 250 yards, but another guy in the foursome crushed it about 280 yards down the fairway. We were left with about 235 yards to a tight pin placement on the front part of the green, the last 100 yards was carry over water. On the second shot, we had one lay up in front of a lake, and two in the water. I hit last, and put my #3 fairway wood to within 5 feet of the pin, and we knocked the putt in for eagle. After a couple of more birdies, we went on to finish about 8 under, and took first place in the tournament. The trophy’s still on my desk.
If I could add or change anything about a round of golf, I would ... How about doing away with overzealous course rangers that take their jobs way too seriously? Or how about doing away with the TOP 100 courses that aren't? We have run into a couple that just weren't worthy of the rating. Golf Digest should have an update or an alert list for courses that drop below the standard! And don't get me started on slow play, pre-shot routine, waggling, and reading putts. Just step up there and hit the damn thing!!! (EDITOR NOTE: That would qualify as a rant!)
My fantasy foursome would include ... Phil Mickelson, Jack Nicklaus, and my golf buddy Jim Allen.
